HEAD INJURY SAFETY/CONCUSSION POLICY
Freestyle skiing & snowboarding are sports where there is risk of concussion in the event of a crash. Team Buller strives to minimise the chance of concussion as well as implement best practice policies in managing athletes in the event of a head injury (or potential head injury) is sustained.
For head injuries and concussions, Team Buller takes direction from Snow Australia, the National Body for snowsports in Australia.

HELMET POLICY
Team Buller takes athlete safety very seriously. We are proud to say that a number of our top athletes have escaped serious head injury on multiple occasions because they were wearing a helmet. Helmets must be worn by all Team Buller athletes during all on snow and water jump training and competitions or when skiing in Team Buller uniform outside of Team Buller sessions. Helmets must be worn correctly with the helmet strap fastened under the chin to ensure that it does its job in the event of a crash.
We recommend a helmet with MIPS technology.
BACK PROTECTION
Team Buller strongly recommends back protection for all athletes, as they are effective in reducing injury from direct impact to your back.
MOUTHGUARDS
Team Buller strongly recommends mouthguards for all athletes, as they can help to reduce or prevent injury in the event of mouth/ tooth impact.
INVERTED AND OFF-AXIS MANOEUVRE ON SNOW POLICY
To ensure safety of Team Buller athletes, any Team Buller member must have approval from the Team Buller Head Coach in the relevant Team Buller training discipline (Grom, Mogul, All-Mountain, Freeride, Slopestyle, Snowboard) before executing inverted or off-axis manoeuvres on snow.
Athletes will be required to demonstrate sufficient competency of each skill on a water jump or air-bag facility including at varied speeds with consistent safe landings. Athletes must also always consult with coaches prior to attempting any new skills on snow.

ATHLETE CODE OF CONDUCT & TRAINING GUIDELINES
- All athletes are expected to conduct themselves in a civil, friendly, and honest manner.
- Each rider is responsible for their own conduct during all Team Buller activities including but not limited to training, competition, and travel. We expected this conduct be of the highest standard at all times.
- Team Buller is a proud organisation with a reputation for maintaining a high standard of conduct both at Mt Buller and within the Australian snow sports industry. We look forward to each and every rider contributing to maintain this high level of conduct throughout the season and into the future.
The following guidelines are put forward with the aim of creating a healthy, fun, and constructive training environment within which our athletes can best achieve their on snow goals. Team Buller treats this aim with great seriousness and repeated behaviour contrary to these guidelines will not be tolerated.
- Communication (eg. text messages, email, WhatsApp) between a coach and athlete under 18 years of age must also include another adult, copy in a parent and/or another coach.
- Helmets are essential. Heads and the stuff that’s in them are important! For that reason, helmets are a must for all athletes during training, competition and at all other appropriate times on snow. NOTE: See below Team Buller Head Injury Safety Policy
- Bullying will not be tolerated, and athletes found to be in breach will risk being suspended from the program or expelled.
- Alcohol, cigarettes, vaping & illegal drugs are obviously not permitted at training, and the inappropriate use of such substances is strongly condemned by Team Buller.
- Team Buller recommends its athletes get a good night’s rest in order to maximise their performance at training. For this reason, Team Buller expects all athletes to be home and off the streets by 10pm
- If a time/date arrangement is made, keep it! Timing is important to Team Buller & we will not tolerate lateness. Notify your coach if you are going to be absent from training.
- Limit the use of profane and abusive language if it is to be used at all. Team Buller is especially keen to limit such language in inappropriate situations e.g., a lift queue in Team Buller uniform.
- Team Buller Coaches & Staff are involved to help athletes become better athletes and maximise their athletic potential. They are experienced and their word is final.
- Team Buller is part of the Mt Buller community and whilst it may seem that we are some of the best athletes out on the hill we must ensure that we treat this position with respect. All mountain staff should be treated with civility, and any incidents should be reported to the Team Buller staff immediately.
- Any injuries or incidents must be communicated to your coach, including those that occur outside of Team Buller training times. Returning to training after a diagnosed injury must have written approval from an appropriate healthcare professional.
PARENT CODE OF CONDUCT
- Remember that children take part in sport for their enjoyment, not yours.
- Children should be encouraged to participate and not forced.
- Create a positive environment for your child that encourages hard work and effort and avoid getting over excited or disappointed with your child from competition results.
- Respect coaches and officials’ decisions and teach children to do likewise.
- Keep a respectful distance from Team Buller groups in the meeting place and training areas.
- Avoid using loud, abusive or aggressive language directly or in the area of athletes, coaches and officials.
- Refrain from approaching coaches or officials during training times or out of Team Buller program hours unless essential.
- For any complaints, please contact Coaching and Performance Director Tim Gale and/or Manager Andrew Pattison or Member Protection Officer Scott Birrell.
UNIFORM POLICY
- During training and competition, Team Buller uniforms are to be worn unless specified otherwise. Uniforms must have a Team Buller logo and include Team Buller jackets, hoodies, soft shells, windcheaters, and long-sleeved T-shirts. This creates a presence for Team Buller on the mountain and allows coaches to keep track of athletes during training.
BREACH OF TRAINING GUIDELINES
- As mentioned, Team Buller treats the aims of these guidelines with great seriousness and repeated behaviour contrary to these guidelines will not be tolerated.
- Appropriate disciplinary action will be taken in light of the circumstances of any potential breach to ensure that the aims of the guidelines are maintained, and our reputation is not adversely affected.

- All athletes 14 years of age or older participating in our All-Mountain, Mogul, Slopestyle, and Snowboard programs are required to complete a comprehensive pre-season baseline test through any Complete Concussions clinic prior to participating in any training or competition.
- For any athlete aged 13 and younger participating in our Grom and Snowboard Programs, comprehensive pre-season baseline testing is highly recommended.
- Following a concussion, an athlete is not to return to competition before a minimum period of 21 days following the injury and 14 days symptom-free (day of injury being day 0). This is in line with current best practice and recommendations from the Australian Institute of Sport.
- Athletes returning to training after a diagnosed concussion must have written clearance from an appropriate healthcare provider (CCMI concussion testing provider or doctor).
